The Best National Parks in the U.S. for Biking

When we think about beautiful landscapes, our mind automatically brings up images of the Swiss Alps or Icelandic glaciers.

Every cyclist dreams of pedaling through spectacular valleys, being greeted by majestic mountains, and surrounded by Mother Nature’s incredible beauty.

But that doesn’t mean there isn’t beauty to be discovered all around us. The U.S. offers some of the best national parks in the world. So, if you’re craving for an adventure, here are a few breathtaking parks to add to your list:

Yellowstone

What makes Yellowstone National Park stand out is that it’s the first national park in the U.S. and the world!

But even if it didn’t have this distinction, it would still be a cyclist’s paradise. There are several trails for cyclists, although there are limited campsites, which you will have to share with hikers.

If you’re heading towards Old Faithful, try renting a bike at  Yellowstone National Park Lodge. Popular routes range from 3-21 miles from easy to difficult – something for everyone.  Be sure to bring the entire family!

Except for Fishing Bridge RV Park and Slough Creek, there are a number of dedicated campsites hikers and cyclists can book in advance.

In the Mammoth Hot Springs area, there are several popular family-friendly trails for cyclists. Some of these are:

  • Abandoned Railroad Bed Bike Trail
  • Bunsen Peak Loop Bike Trail
  • The Old Gardiner Road Bike Trail

In the West Yellowstone area, there’s the Riverside Bike Trail. And in the Old Faithful area, there are two trails— Fountain Freight Road Bike Trail and Lone Star Geyser Bike Trail.

Yosemite

Who hasn’t heard of Yosemite National Park? It’s one of California’s most-visited national parks, and for good reason too!

It has beautiful waterfalls, daunting cliffs, gorgeous flora, and idiosyncratic rock formations. There’s El Capitan and Half Dome that’s worth visiting and you’ll also find several trails that are perfect for cyclists and hikers!

You’ll get full view of the beautiful, unspoiled natural landscapes the park has to offer while riding through the trails.

The Grand Canyon

The list can’t be complete without the Grand Canyon. Online photos can’t do justice to this magnificent, marvelous park!

You’ll have to see it in person to be able to appreciate its beauty. There are several trails dedicated to cyclists only. You can also book campsites for as low as $6 per night.

But beware; you’ll be subject to the same traffic rules as automobiles. You can bring your own bicycle or rent one, it’s up to you. You’ll find rentals in the South Rim—more specifically, the Mather Campground.

Glacier National Park

Last but not least, this park is heaven on earth for cyclists. Sun Road offers an unforgettable experience for cyclists. Surrounded by striking landscapes and gorgeous mountains, this Montana road will leave impressed and speechless!

Just be careful because the 6,646-foot Logan Pass will require a bike that can handle rough terrains.

You’ll have to ride your bike for 50 miles to reach your destination. Make sure you’re well-equipped. Plan your trip properly and make sure you have plenty of water and food to keep you going!

Carrying a tool box will also help and don’t forget your safety gear.

These are just a few things to keep in mind. If you’re planning a trip to one of these national parks, check out ZestyBike’s bicycle accessories and tools.

Remember, it’s better to be safe than sorry!
